Good news for those of you who missed Dakota Dave Hull’s appearance in Sligo two years ago, and for those fans who were there: the ace American guitarist will be back on Wednesday the 6th of October.
Dakota Dave Hull plays an infectious, uniquely personal blend of jazz, ragtime, blues, folk, Western swing, and vintage pop.
A gifted composer as well as a strikingly original interpreter of older tunes, Dakota Dave calls what he does “classic American guitar.” He plays his tunes in a fingerstyle that incorporates melody, bass and chords, all at the same time, giving the impression that two or three guitars are played simultaneously. Folk legend Dave van Ronk said of him that he “happens to be one of the best guitarists in the world”, who “simply has the best tone of anyone in America”, and to express himself dynamically he “flicks a note here, drops a bomb there, and is always in there listening, thinking.”
Most of all, Dakota Dave’s music is great fun. As Douglas Greene (Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky) puts it, “There is an imp within Dave Hull that always expresses itself on the fretboard; a witty, intelligent yet respectful imp who frolics in his music, an imp Dakota Dave neither fights nor lets take control, but simply absorbs into the heart of his style.”
Dakota Dave has published three albums with Sean Blackburn, one with Pop Wagner, and six solo efforts: the acclaimed Hull’s Victory and Reunion Rag (both on Flying Fish) and New Shirt, Sheridan Square Rag, The Loyalty Waltz and Time Machine on Arabica Records. His three albums with guitar and mandolin virtuoso Kari Larson (also on Arabica) have become legendary.
He will be introducing his brand new album at the concert, which starts at 8 p.m. Upstairs in Tobergal Lane Restaurant, Sligo on Wednesday the 6th of October.
Don’t miss it!
For guitarists who are interested in learning some of Dave’s techniques, he will conduct a guitar workshop in Sligo on Tuesday the 5th of October, upstairs in Tobergal Lane Restaurant, from 7.30 to 10 p.m. Tickets for the concert and tickets for the workshop are €15 (or €12 for concessions), available at the door.
